Pensive Beauty® Nanoscience Labs, a cosmetic nanoscience laboratory in Seffner, Florida, manufactures NanoBase™, a cosmetic raw material: a tri-domain nano-colloidal Architecture with nanocolloidal, nanoliposomal and nanomicellar domains, designed to an electrostatic (DLVO) stabilisation specification rather than an HLB emulsifier target, engineered to a ~185 nm design target, DLS-characterised every batch, and used at 55-95% of leave-on cosmetic formulas. As supplied it is a low-viscosity Architecture, ready to load with oils, actives and texture; brands build the body, sensory and finish of their own formula on it with standard cosmetic equipment.
The architecture
Most emulsified skincare is still designed to an HLB target, a 1949 heuristic for matching an emulsifier to an oil phase. It produces a single-structure emulsion and asks the formula to do everything from one architecture. NanoBase™ is built differently: three domains are designed to coexist in one Architecture.
- Nanocolloidal domain for oil-soluble materials.
- Nanoliposomal domain for vesicle-compatible materials.
- Nanomicellar domain for a third solubility class.
The electrostatic (DLVO) specification is intended to keep the three domains from coalescing. Finished formulas built on the Architecture average about 250 nm.
How it is used
Pensive Beauty manufactures NanoBase™ and ships it as a cosmetic raw material. A brand completes its finished leave-on formula on the NanoBase™ Architecture with standard cosmetic equipment and gentle room-temperature mixing, for use on intact skin. The brand’s contract manufacturer makes the finished product; NanoBase™ itself is made only by Pensive Beauty.
